“Satan himself lives here in San Pedro,” says one nervous mortician who asks to be identified only as Lucas. “People here kill people like they’re nothing more than chickens.”

Authorities merely cite notes left near bodies alleging victims are associated with Mexican drug cartels, and often that is not the case

By Deborah Hastings / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

In Mexico’s savage drug wars, the innocent are not only shot, dismembered or hanged from overpasses. They are also falsely accused of crimes and their deaths are never investigated.

“The authorities will allege that the people being murdered are related to drug cartels, and it’s just not true,” said Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, a professor at the University of Texas in Brownsville, who also does cartel violence research in [...]

The Durango state governor was on his way to meet with reporters. Before he arrived, the reporters huddled to decide the question of the moment. It seemed obvious: Why had a former mayor been arrested the day before in what clearly seemed to be a political move? “That was the only question,” a reporter said later. “Did the governor have the ex-mayor arrested? Because, behind that move, you can feel a crackdown coming against the opposition.” Yet, this reporter added, “It was too dangerous to ask. No one was brave [...]
