MOSCOW, (RIA Novosti) – A total of 80 kg (over 176 lbs) of heroin were discovered on a train en route from the Tajik capital of Dushanbe to Moscow on Wednesday, the Russian Interior Ministry said on Thursday.

FLEMINGTON, N.J. — There are no heroin kingpins in Hunterdon County, according to Prosecutor Anthony Kearns, and he wants to keep it that way.
Most people don’t associate the mostly rural county of 130,000 with drug trafficking, but as the number of young prescription pill addicts turned heroin junkies balloons throughout the state, Hunterdon has become a battleground.
The number of New Jerseyans between the ages of 18 and 25 in treatment for heroin addiction jumped by 12 percent between 2010 and 2011, records show, and Hunterdon felt the brunt of that [...]

A Canadian naval vessel has made another significant drug discovery on its mission in the Indian Ocean.
Crew members from HMCS Toronto searched a boat and found 315 kilograms of heroin on Monday, said Defence Minister Peter MacKay. The crew also found hashish that will be destroyed.
In March, the crew of the frigate was responsible for making one of the largest heroin seizures ever on the high seas. They uncovered more than $150 million worth of drugs.
The area is a key shipping route for the region. After the first drug bust, the commanding officer of [...]

ZARI, Afghanistan — Because of the poppies, the raw material for most of the world’s heroin, the list of things 1st Lt. Christopher Gackstatter and his 2nd Platoon can’t do in Sartok is far longer than the list of things they can.
Marching into the mud-walled village in this sun-baked district of southern Afghanistan on an April 24 intelligence-gathering mission, the boyish 25-year-old lieutenant and his roughly dozen riflemen and machine gunners are mindful of the many poppy-related prohibitions, developed over 12 painful years of war, that have been passed down to [...]

Canada border officials have made their single largest seizure of heroin in Alberta, busting a passenger with 12 kg of the drug hidden in suitcases at the Calgary airport.
Coupled with 4 kg of the drug another passenger tried smuggling in days later — bringing the total amount found to 16 kg — RCMP say taking the more than 800,000 doses of the drug off the street is a win in the battle against organized crime.
On April 24, a passenger returning to Canada from Amsterdam went through customs but due [...]

The international drug trade continues to ply the “Balkan route,” bringing narcotics through Turkey and the Balkans to Europe in a multi-billion euro illicit industry run by sophisticated organised crime groups, the European Union’s law enforcement agency, Europol, found in its annual report.
“Routes through Western Balkan countries remain important for the movement of many illicit commodities into the EU. Heroin and cocaine pass through the Western Balkans after transiting through Turkey and Africa,” the EU Serious and Organised Crime Threat Assessment 2013 (SOCTA), report stated.
The international drug [...]

Three times as much opium was produced in Helmand last year as when British troops went there in 2006, and a new UN forecast says that this year’s crop will be even higher. Opium is the raw material for heroin, and most of the illegal drugs for sale on the UK’s streets come from Afghanistan.
Like many other farmers in Helmand province, Hamidullah planted cotton last year, encouraged by British and American agricultural advisers.
But there was no market for it, and he planted opium poppies again this year.
“The price [...]

Vancouver, British Columbia (CNN) — Heroin, cocaine and amphetamines are the kind of street drugs you expect to find in the shady corners of any city, hiding away from the glare of law enforcement.
