NEW ORLEANS — A political brawl has broken out between the mayor and a sheriff who runs the city jail, which has come under scrutiny for a video showing inmates using drugs, drinking beer and handling a gun.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu asked a judge last Tuesday to take the extraordinary step of placing the jail under federal oversight, effectively wresting control of it away from Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman. Landrieu is upset over an agreement Gusman reached with the U.S. Justice Department to reform the jail, saying the city, which funds [...]

Sheriff moves to fire deputies in Jump Out Boys clique

2/09/2012

Seven Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies have been notified that the department intends to fire them for being members of a secret law enforcement clique that celebrated shootings and branded its members with matching tattoos, officials said.

The Times reported last year about the existence of the clique, dubbed the Jump Out Boys and the discovery of a pamphlet that described the group’s creed, which appeared to promote aggressive policing and portray officer shootings in a positive light.

The seven worked on an elite gang enforcement team.

(CNN) — An Oregon sheriff says he will not enforce any federal regulation that President Barack Obama lays out in his package of gun control proposals Wednesday.

Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller joins several other public officials across the nation who have decided to square off with the White House even before it outlines what its plans are for expanded measures.

Mueller sent a letter to Vice President Joe Biden this week saying he won’t enforce any federal regulation “offending the constitutional rights of my citizens.” He won’t permit federal [...]

There’s been a lot of interest from the scientific community in the not-so-simple relationship between marijuana use and a person’s risk of psychosis. The connection is especially important to understand in young people, whose brains are still wiring themselves, a process that continues right up through one’s 20s. Some researchers have framed the issue as a chicken-or-egg conundrum, wondering whether pot smoking leads to psychosis or whether underlying psychosis makes one more likely to smoke pot. A new study set out to determine whether it’s one or the other – or [...]

Kaleb Young, 34, had been growing the plants in a Wellington home in compliance with Colorado’s medical [...]

PJ Media readers may recall that a few months back we exposed rampant corruption inside the Hidalgo County, TX Sheriff’s Department. In our three-part Border Conspiracy series we showed exclusive hidden-camera video in which a crime analyst admitted that the department falsifies its crime statistics in order to make the vital border county appear to be much safer than it really is. We also presented exclusive video of a current sheriff’s deputy who alleged that the department has been infiltrated by the Mexican drug cartels.

Hidalgo County’s falsified crime statistics serve several purposes. They help Sheriff Lupe [...]

Federal drug authorities raided a pair of medical marijuana collectives in Anderson and Mount Shasta today, according the Drug Enforcement Administration.

But officials are remaining tight-lipped on the details.

DEA agents served federal search warrants to the Green Heart locations in both cities, Special Agent Casey Rettig said.

However, documents relating to the warrants and the warrants themselves are sealed in federal court, Rettig said. She couldn’t provide a court case number.

“I don’t have any information on that,” she said.

Owner Gina Munday was notified by her alarm company [...]

BROWNSVILLE – The debate over spillover violence has gone public in Cameron County.

County leaders on Wednesday released a new public service video warning residents about the impact Mexican drug cartels have on both sides of the border.

Law enforcement officials and judges have different opinions on the subject. Now they are asking the public to voice their concerns.

The video posed one question. How can we stop spillover violence?

“I can’t say they’re doing a poor job … they’re doing an impossible job,” said Willacy County resident Edgar Clinton.

Law enforcement officials asked residents for help.
